In the spring of 2011 KSJD began a project with the American Graduate Initiative to promote academic success.  SCYC and the OMNI Institute have worked with KSJD to survey the community (Montezuma and Dolores Counties) to discover beliefs around education.   We found that all adults value education yet only about 70% believe others value.  This data demonstrates a large misperception and you can help to change this by simply telling others that you value education.  You will be amazed to see how these simple conversations can help our community to prosper.

Greeting All!  SCYC is super excited to announce our very first Jingle Bell Dash!  This event is a 5K or 1Mi run/ walk to raise funds to support SCYC and it’s programs and most importantly, celebrate our amazing educators.  The event will take place Saturday, December 17, 2011 with sign-in at 9:30am at Let It Grow Nursery and Garden Market.  Participants will choose their pace and distance and participate as individuals or teams.  After the course, we will gather at Let It Grow to celebrate and enjoy some warm beverages and treats.

The theme for our very first Jingle Bell Dash is celebrating educators.  The bells (and jingles) that participants tie to their shoelaces represents the steps that our educators have taken, take, and will take in pursuit of offering great education to our youth!  All of their hardwork, passion, and committment are worth celebrating!  We will have a supply drive at Let It Grow where we will be collecting educator neccessities like dry erase markers, highlighters, staples, copy paper, etc.  There are often times that our educators supply their own materials, and it would be another great way to show that this community truly values education.

Registration for this event closes with our inaugural price of $15 per individual and $12 per team member (4 or more) on December 7.  We will take registration up to the event with the price increasing to $20 per individual and $17 per team member.  We are also asking our participants to gather pledges of support from their friends, family, coworkers, etc. so SCYC can continue to create pro-social opportunities for area youth as well as and educator appreciation.

A very exciting part of the Jingle Bell Dash is the Elf Scurry!  This is free to children 10 and under or $5 which includes a cute elf hat.  Youth and adult volunteers will get your little ones wigglin’ and wagglin’, jinglin’ and jivin’ to celebrate educators and the holiday season!  And who doesn’t like elf hats?

Please spread the word to all of your friends and collegues.  We want to rock the region with jingle bells for education!  Form a team or participate individually.  Decide if you want to be a Dasher Dasher or Rudolph Roamer.  Maybe you really want to be part of the event but have a prior committment or need the extra sleep, become a Winter Dreamer.  The Jingle Bell Dash is going to be tons of fun and a great way to get into the holiday and community spirit and celebrate educators!

We have had a great team: Chuck McAfee, Julia Hesse, Kellie Willis, Vangi McCoy and Rebecca Larson, who have been invaluable in helping us to establish what SCYC will be going into the future. As always we greatly appreciate everyone else that continues to show their support!

We have two wonderful AmeriCorps members that you may get to work with over the next year. We are thankful that Cindy Houston, the youth programs coordinator has chosen to continue for a second year. Tyra Hughes is new to the organization and is the coordinator for the Teen Maze and will work with the Montelores Early Childhood Council to coordinate the Early Childhood Celebration, family nights and professional development opportunities. We are very excited to have both of these talented women working with us!

SCYC Meetings

There will be no more SCYC meetings for the remainder of the year. We plan to have a big celebration for the transformed SCYC in February. Please watch for an announcement for more details. We are also working on a fundraiser that will be a whole lot of fun! More information will be coming to you within the next week.
